Moneyball begins to take its toll within Ducks athletics

Missing: Have you seen this man? 2004 CWS Champion, six CWS appearances.

How much money did Oregon baseball take in as a gross profit last year?

Answer: A measly $649,981

Any idea how much the team spent in 2011?

No worries, there’s an answer to that too. But beware, it’s disturbing: $2.9 million.

Here’s a quick economics lesson. That is a deficit of roughly $1.54 million. It doesn’t take a Wall Street tycoon to realize this simple formula–If spending more than what is being earned, it’s going to lead to a problem.

So, what happens when a team, no matter the level, doesn’t generate a profit? The stench of extinct

Oregon’s New Straddled Triple Option Combo Series

The big wins do more for the next level Oregon fan than simply allow us to watch the fun plays and eye the reserves.  Sub-division teams like Tennessee Tech may not provide a fair assessment of the 2012 Oregon Ducks team, as Fresno State has been the only team to offer up much resistance if any against the starters, but these first games have given an opportunity to learn about an important play series emerging, and the new wrinkles that are clearly taking a larger role in the Duck playbook than in prior years.

Chip likes to utilize his personnel to their unique strengths, so let’s see how he does it with Oregon’s new Straddled Triple Option Combo Series!

We know the end result of this run, De’Anthony Thomas bursts into the open field (above) for the Touchdown!  It was exciting to see this new wrinkle back in the Straddled Triple Option, and to see such tremendous blocking by the offensive line aread more

FishDuck Weekly Video Log – Episode 59

Every week Kurt Liedtke (better known as Keeerrrttt1), co-owner of FishDuck.com, creates video blogs (vlogs) to update all you fine folk on all things FishDuck, a free-form discussion of current events about Oregon Ducks sports and all that’s new with FishDuck.com, with the occasional off-topics or rants. It’s a little off-the-cuff, perhaps slightly pretentious, somewhat rambling, and hopefully entertaining…so kick back, relax, drink up, and let’s talk a little Duck sports.

The opinions expressed in these videos are strictly the opinions of Keeerrrttt1 and do not necessarily reflect the views of all involved with FishDuck.com.

Injuries and Access: It’s Time for an Injury Report

Which is what made John Boyett’s career-ending injury that much more confusing and difficult for Oregon fans.  Instead of having a “five stages of grief”-level of processing, the announcement of Boyett’s absence in the Fresno State game was radioed into the press box with less emotion than a price check at Safeway.  “John Boyett has been removed from the lineup today.”

Notes from around the college football nation: Pitt stomps Hokies and Tide is still rolling

Let’s just get our earplugs out now, because this week will be nothing but “Notre Dame is back!” talk after their win over Michigan State, a darkhorse national championship contender. Arkansas’ disastrous season off both off and on-field issues just got a little longer after playing Alabama this past weekend, shutout in Fayatteville for the first time since 1966, 52-0.

Plus, Virginia Tech is just following usual protocol–lose to a team they are supposed to beat, but then win out and make it to a BCS bowl game. I did noread more

FishDuck Game Review: Flags Fly As Ducks Cruise Past Golden Eagles

There is no cheering in the Autzen Stadium press box. No asking for autographs from players, or having your photo taken with players or coaches. It is the third rail in the life of a sports reporter, do not touch it. There is no wearing Oregon’s colors, unless green and yellow happen to be part of your business casual ensemble.

Yet even if my usual costume was missing, as an Oregon fanatic playing the role of media for FishDuck.com at Saturday’s Tennessee Tech-Oregon game, I half expected the elevator carrying me from beneath Autzen’s seating bowl up to the press box to reveal not a wide-angle view of Rich Brooks field but Saint Peter and the Pearly Gates.

Game 3 Preview: Tennessee Tech vs. Oregon

TENNESSEE TECH GOLDEN EAGLES at OREGON DUCKS
Saturday, September 15th
kickoff 12:06 pm

Two weeks into the season, and we know about as much about the Oregon football team as we did on August 31st, save for a couple unfortunate injuries. The defense, as expected, has been stout, yet untested. The offense, occasionally explosive, but maddeningly inconsistent. The special teams? Non-existent at best, turnover prone at worst.

The Ducks, after nonchalant victories over Arkansas State and Fresno State, welcome in the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles to close out the out-of-conference schedule.

Another opportunity arrives for Oregon to work out the kinks in the offense, and continue to build depth in the secondary–hopefully while bucking the

Previewing Today’s Pac-12 Action

Good morning Fish Fans.
I know that we are all still trying to catch our collective breaths after last night’s thrilling Washington State/UNLV game. The action on the field was end-to-end and non-stop, but the most exciting moment came late in the third quarter when entertainer extraordinaire Wayne Newton made an appearance in support of the Runnin’ Rebels.

It is unfortunate that he showed up before his latest botox injection had fully set in, but it was exciting to see him there nonetheless.

On to Saturday’s action…

California at Ohio State:
Cal has been consistent this year. They gave up 31 points to Nevada and lost. They gave up 31 points to Southern Utah and won. It is expected that they will give up 31 points in the first half to Tattoo U, leavi

One-On-One: Oregon LB Tony Koker (1990-1993)

Oregon LB Tony Koker (1990-1993)

Each week FishDuck.com’s Kurt Liedtke (better known as Keeerrrttt1) speaks with current/former student athletes, other FishDuck contributors, and outside experts–the FishDuck.com One-On-One.

This week Kurt is joined by Oregon Ducks linebacker Tony Koker. A native of Lebanon, OR, Tony played linebacker for the Ducks from 1990-1993. A back injury forced him to miss his senior year, the 1994 Rose Bowl year. An imposing figure at 6’4″, he was an important rotational player on special teams and at linebacker in the early 90s.

Tony now works for Wildish Construction, being in the unique position of going from a player metaphorically building the UO program to literally building the prog
